But when our son Mason Summit was born, I backed away from the lit scene and her class to focus on my family as a full-time mom. Holly was crucial in instilling in me a more serious approach to my work. Soon, I began attending Holly Prado’s Tuesday night workshop. It was a whirlwind of delight and the first time I ever got paid to create. We included much of Haslam’s writing and also wrote our own scenes. Later, Chris and I got a grant from South Coast Repertory Theatre to collaborate on a six-day workshop and presentation based on the writing of Gerald Haslam for SCR’s Nexus Project. Often, the writers of these stories would be present. We took Jim Krusoe’s words and Robert Olmstead’s words and created staged readings. No one was doing this sort of thing in Los Angeles yet. We produced it at The Lost Studio, where we’d pair actors and directors and present dramatized short fiction for the stage just as it was written in a book. My then-husband, actor Christopher Allport, was fascinated by what I was doing at the Met and suggested we collaborate on a performance fiction series. That’s when I started writing short fiction and inviting actors to perform it. They had a Saturday scene study class and I convinced them they needed to include writers in the mix. ![]() The Met was run by a Board of actors and playwrights, including Amy Madigan, Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, and Beth Henley. It was directed by former movie actor Alan Vint. Shortly thereafter, a play I’d written at Padua, Tent Show, was discovered by actor Tom Bower, who brought it to the Met Theatre in Los Angeles, produced it and also starred in it with O-Lan Jones and Arliss Howard. I loved bringing writers together and finding the balance. I later produced Poetry for Padua, a fundraiser where Michael Blake (Dances With Wolves) read from his poems. poets of that era to read, like John Thomas, Philomene Long, Michael C Ford, and Laurel Ann Bogen. I began to read from my work nearly every week at Poetry In Motion. ![]() It’s where I came across Harry Northup, who would become my first poet friend and one day star in a staged reading of my first play, Boomerang, at the Cast Theatre in Hollywood. ![]() That’s when I encountered poets whose language pulled me in. I was depressed that night about how my fledgling acting career was at a permanent standstill, so I moved from the Theatre section to the Poetry wall, when the anthology The Streets Inside: Ten Los Angeles Poets (edited by Bill Mohr, Momentum Press) fell off the shelf and onto my lap. I’d already been writing poetry, and then a book literally fell on me while I was sitting on a bench at the Bodhi Tree Used Bookstore. As he told Richard Whittaker in Works & Conversations, “You learn the text, and value the text, and put the text first.” Padua’s founder, Murray Mednick, imparted to us the importance of text. I would later enroll in the Padua Hills Playwrights Workshop, where I studied with playwrights John Steppling, Leon Martell, and Maria Irene Fornes (to name a few). This immersion inspired me to write and perform my own scenes in class and I found writing to be an organic relief. I think I read and dissected a play a day back then! Jeff Corey, who’d been a teacher to both James Dean and Jack Nicholson, encouraged us to read as many plays as we could get our hands on and then made us identify the theme of each one before we could get on stage to perform. In acting class, I felt a sense of connection and camaraderie. There weren’t a lot of artists where I grew up, in Encino in the 1970s. That said, just being a part of a creative community was a first for me. It planted a seed that propelled me, as a young adult, to drop out of college, get a waitress job, and join Jeff Corey’s acting workshop, where I found out that I had debilitating stage fright and no talent whatsoever. And he predicted I would be a famous actress one day. He’d helped the police department try to solve the Manson Murders and the Boston Strangler case. When I was nine, I met a world-renowned psychic named Peter Hurkos. Hi Susan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story. In this respect, we hold that Weiskopf’s account neglects the diversity of explanatory purposes found in the special sciences. We argue that the assessment of the explanatory legitimacy of functional kinds also needs to consider the purpose of the model in which a functional kind is employed. In this paper, we aim at defending new functionalism by recasting it in light of the concrete explanatory aims of the special sciences, more broadly construed. He takes this dilemma to pose a serious challenge to new functionalism. Buckner argues that functional kinds are either still amenable to mechanistic decomposition (this holds for abstractions) or that the models involving functional kinds incur a loss of counterfactual power (this holds for fictions and reifications). In a recent iteration of the debate between functionalists and mechanists, Buckner ( 2015) introduces a dilemma for Weiskopf’s account. However, new functionalism has also received some critical reactions. Taken together, both of these elements are intended to show that functional kinds can serve as central explanatory units in the special sciences even if they are not amenable to mechanistic decomposition. Each of these strategies indicates why a particular functional kind is not amenable to mechanistic decomposition. Moreover, according to Weiskopf, functional kinds can be individuated via one of three different strategies: fictionalization, reification, or abstraction. Footnote 2 Roughly, new functionalism holds that functionally individuated states and processes constitute kinds if they figure into a range of successful models instead of well-supported laws. To address these concerns, Weiskopf ( 2011a, 2011b, 2017) has posited a reformulation of functionalism on the model-based approach to explanation-we refer to this reformulation as new functionalism. This leaves functionalism in a precarious position regarding whether and how functionally individuated states and processes can legitimately figure into explanations. According to mechanists, it is through mechanistic decomposition that the special sciences ultimately achieve their explanatory aims. On the other hand, recent growing support for mechanistic explanation in the special sciences suggests that functionalism’s emphasis on roles can be problematic if it prevents scientists from decomposing systems under investigation into mechanisms (Craver & Bechtel, 2006 Bechtel & Richardson, 2010). The main problem with this defense is that it has become doubtful whether there are any such laws in the special sciences (Cartwright, 1999 cf. On the one hand, early defenders of functionalism, like Fodor ( 1974), argued that the existence of well-supported laws involving functional kinds vindicates functionalism as an explanatory strategy. While functionalism is still dominant in many domains of the biological, behavioral, and psychological sciences, evolving debates in philosophy of science indicate problems with traditional arguments in support of functionalism. Footnote 1 Functionalists maintain that such functionally individuated states and processes can legitimately figure into explanations in the special sciences. The standard view of functionalism holds that some states and processes can be individuated based on what role they play rather than on what they are strictly constituted of. Whether functionalism offers a legitimate basis for providing explanations in the special sciences is an on-going debate in philosophy of science. Our argument is intended to have the double impact of deflecting criticisms against new functionalism from the perspective of mechanistic decomposition while also expanding the scope of new functionalism to encompass the social and behavioral sciences. ![]() Specifically, we focus on preferences and signals as functional kinds. ![]() We aim at demonstrating this by appealing to model-based explanations from the social and behavioral sciences. In particular, we argue that the assessment of the explanatory legitimacy of a functional kind needs to take into account the explanatory purpose of the model in which the functional kind is employed. ![]() In this paper, we seek to defend new functionalism and to recast it in light of the concrete explanatory aims of the special sciences. We refer to this reformulation as ‘new functionalism’. Recently, Weiskopf (2011a, 2011b) has posited a reformulation of functionalism on the model-based approach to explanation. Generally construed, functionalism is the view that states or processes can be individuated based on what role they play rather than what they are constituted of or realized by. Functionalism about kinds is still the dominant style of thought in the special sciences, like economics, psychology, and biology. Peter Wiegel re-created Mittelschrift and Breitschrift only. It is difficult to portray any chemistry on screen, especially when the two characters suffer from a significant age gap. Padme is already something of a teenager, if not a mature adult in Phantom Menace. Perhaps this is what really angers fans about Hayden Christensen. Even worse, the chemistry between him and Natalie Portman just fell apart and dashed the hopes any old fan had of seeing Anakin portraying his fall to the dark side in a relatable way. This is perhaps the biggest of all mishaps George Lucas engineered: the failure of portraying Anakin Skywalker the right way. As if that were not enough, Hayden Christensen butchered Anakin’s role further in the later prequels. Jackson, for whom George Lucas is reported to have especially made the character of Mace Windu. ![]() There is Jake Loyd who played young Anakin Skywalker and who is reported to have grown up hating the role he played. One of the things critics point to is the horrible acting by some of the actors. Acting – It’s Coarse and Rough and Irritating and it Gets Everywhere It’s all Lucas’ fault! He’s overly critical, he never listens! First, let us look at the common arguments against the prequels: Horrible acting, contradiction to the original trilogy, and JarJar Binks. And while the original trilogy is not perfect, it’s not wholly brilliant as some like to say. While the prequels are not perfect (at all), they are not wholly horrible either. Part of what it is to love something is to acknowledge the good and bad. Now, before readers close the window in distaste, hear the argument. My thesis: Make no mistake, the Star Wars prequels are brilliant masterpieces. Not only that, but since the prequels are held in godly regard, I will also point out inherent flaws in them to show, once and for all, that all movies are created equal, flaws and all, and the best of classics are no exception. I will go further to say that the prequels are not bad but inherently brilliant to their core. Building from what some esteemed colleagues of mine wrote, I would like to deliver an outright defense of the prequels, from their dialogue to the annoying side characters to even the plot itself and the Universe building. More and more fans assume that the prequels are cut out of the Star Wars chronology entirely since The Force Awakens hit cinemas. It’s an unpopular opinion these days, especially with The Force Awakens newly released. Before getting to why, it is only fair to take a look at some of the hard work that went into this masterpiece, in the form of a music video of the ‘Duel of the Fates.’ The prequels enhance the original trilogy and in some ways The Force Awakens in more ways than one. They are masterpieces in their own right. Contrary to popular criticism, the prequels of the beloved saga, Star Wars, particularly The Phantom Menace, are brilliant pieces of art. 4/17/2024 0 Comments 2048 online puzzle matrix gamesYou'll sharpen your memory, improve your concentration levels, and enhance your reflexes.
